    Of course, that doesn't happen often. But, as these tech workers shared, when a major developer in the company quits, sometimes the consequences are more far-reaching than anyone could've predicted.

Good enough to boot up a startup but not good enough to scale. It turns out nobody is irreplaceable and usually 1 person coding in isolation means no peer review which almost always is a bad signal.

  • Some folks discovered that their workplaces quite literally had been held together by a single person's work. Unique visions for the company's tech mean that future workers are totally befuddled by that prior employee's work. They're college trained and ready, but… they're no match for one random person's style. 

    In some cases, workers insist on being paid to return and rework the mess they left behind. But some people who have been left behind with the mess will tell you that they bear the brunt of these mistakes — they might have to spend months trying to backwards engineer a solution for themselves.

  • Outrageous-Exam... A year later, they hired me back as a part time contractor for 6X what they were paying me per hour when I resigned. Eventually, they said they couldn't afford me anymore, then they went out of business about a year later.
